Donington Park motor racing circuit in England has been awarded planning permission for a £100 million revamp by North West Leicestershire District Council. The news means that major development works can now begin on the track and its surroundings, which is contracted to host the British Grand Prix for ten years from 2010.
The improvements include a renovation of the circuit as well as a new pit and paddock area, race control buildings and new service roads. Work is expected to commence immediately, with the clubhouse scheduled for completion in June 2010, just weeks before the British Grand Prix. However, some critics have raised concerns that a lack of financing may ruin the tight schedule. However Chief Executive Simon Gillett shrugged off the concerns, telling BBC Sport:
“They’ll see when buildings come out of the ground and cars turn up on the grid,” he said.
“If they still want to sit at home not believing me, that’s their prerogative. To be honest, I love the scepticism. It’s what motivates me.
“The more the experts tell me it won’t happen, the more I seem to achieve. I feed off it.
“It doesn’t concern me at all. I have my goals and I know they’re realistic.”
On Donington Park’s official website, Chief Executive Simon Gillett reacted to the news:
“We will definitely be celebrating tonight. This is a major step forward and one more target delivered. I remain committed to approaching every stage of this development with the same passion and vigour with which we attacked the planning stage and I have endeavoured to ensure that the same is true of the people who will work with me on this project.
“My eye is always on that fixed end date of July 2010. I remain confident and positive that we can and will achieve everything that we have promised and I won’t rest until I am watching the British Grand Prix at Donington Park next year.”
