Kinnarps Arena

Jönköping // Sweden | Home to: HV71 // Elitserien // Ice Hockey

Profile

Kinnarps Arena is an ice hockey venue in Jönköping, Sweden.

The arena, which is located in the Rosenlund district of Jönköping, was built between September 17, 1999, and September 2000. It was literally built around and on top of the old arena Rosenlundshallen while HV71 was still playing their regular season games.

To improve HV71’s youth programme a training facility connected to Kinnarps Arena was built and stood ready for use in May 2001. In December of 2003 the decision to expand the arena for season 2004-05 with another 1,000 seats, a restaurant, a sports bar, a café, a sky bar, new conference rooms and boxes, was made.

In the pre-season of 2007-08 HV71 invested in a new LED scoreboard, measuring 6.2 by 10.5 feet, capable of a display surpassing any LED scoreboards currently installed in Sweden. The scoreboard is a Daktronics Prostar Video 10 mm indoor diplay and resembles the boards used in General Motors Place and Scottrade Center in NHL, and in Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in Europe.

Kinnarps Arena was designed by Flensborns arkitektkontor and Skanska as contractor, with Kinnarps AB financing the project. Future proprietor and owner of the arena is HV71 Fastighets AB, a subsidiary to HV71.

Scandinavium is an indoor event arena in Gothenburg, Sweden. Located in the entertainment district of Gothenburg, with Ullevi Stadium, Liseberg, Universeum, the Museum of World Culture and Sweden’s largest movie theater nearby.

Opened in 1971, the arena was built in time for the 350th year anniversary celebration of the city of Gothenburg.

The new entrance hall contains a box office, a restaurant, a bar, an office floor and a McDonald’s restaurant. The roof is an inverted hyperbolic paraboloid, similar in design to the one of the Pengrowth Saddledome in Calgary.

It has ice hockey sideboards made of tempered glass, designed for switch to NHL rink dimensions.

Scandinavium has been selected as a championship arena at least fifty times, hosting Ice Hockey World Championships in 1981 and 2002, European championships, world cup finals, Davis Cup finals, and the Eurovision Song Contest 1985. It’s the home arena for the Frölunda Indians Ice hockey team and venue for the annual Göteborg Horse Show and Melodifestivalen.

Limpopo World Cup stadium funding crisis

13.Oct.08
A funding crisis is developing in South Africa, with the completion of the Peter Mokaba 2010 FIFA World Cup Sports Complex now in serious doubt. Polokwane executive mayor Thabo Makunyane announced that the budget of R1,3billion has been exhausted and another R251 million will have to be found in order to complete construction.

The developers have approached the Treasury and will also seek funding from the Development Bank of Southern Africa. Despite the stadium being already delayed by weather and labour-relations problems, Polokwane insist that the project will be finished in time for the 2009 FIFA deadline if the necessary funds are found.

Sowetan.co.za published quotes from Polokwane executive mayor Thabo Makunyane:

“The construction of the stadium was budgeted at R1,3 billion, which is almost exhausted,” Makunyane said. “The remaining 49 percent of the stadium will need an extra R251 million.”

Construction started in March last year and was supposed to have been completed by March this year.

“But because of rains and labour-related problems work was hampered and the completion period extended,” Makunyane said.

“If we get the funds in time the entire complex will be finished before the Fifa June 2009 deadline,” he promised.

He said most of the roads in the city would be revamped to cope with the volume of transport anticipated during the games.

“We have a budget of R143million from the national Department of Transport for the improvement of roads infrastructure around the city and the stadium,” Makunyane said.

New Yankee Stadium: some features in focus

9.Oct.08
Today we link to a fascinating article written by Pete Sabatini of the New York Yankees Examiner. It looks at the ten most anticipated features of the new Yankees Stadium which is now fast approaching completition.

It appears that some of the previous sadness amongst Yankees fans for the loss of the old stadium is transferring into excitement about the prospects for the new ballpark.

Here is a short exceprt from the article. As always, the link to the full article follows.

… 6 – 500,000’ of elbow room. The new stadium will have 500,000 square feet of additional internal space making it 63% larger than the old stadium. Maybe that means sweaty shirtless guy won’t press up against me on the way out.

5 – 100’ scoreboard. The new video board will measure 59’ x 101’ as opposed to the old 25’ x 33’. The new board will also be in high definition. Camden Yards got a new video board for the 2008 season and after seeing what that upgrade could do for replays I’m really looking forward to seeing it in the Bronx. A humongous Kiss Cam I will not look forward to. …

Chester, PA on schedule for 2010 MLS deadline

9.Oct.08
Hopes for a new stadium in Chester, Philadelphia that will eventually host a new Major League Soccer franchise have taken a step forward with this week’s announcement that the site has been given brownfield status.

The new designation means that the Chester Waterfront Redevelopment project will gain priority review and a smoother route to development. The $155 million, 18,500 seater stadium must be built by April 2010 as a condition of the the MLS franchise being awarded to the Philadelphia area.

Costar.com quoted acting Department of Environmental Protection Secretary John Hanger:

The project “will bring new jobs and tax revenues to a city that has struggled for decades, and will provide a tremendous opportunity to reconnect the surrounding neighborhood with the waterfront,” Hanger said. “The stadium will be a catalyst for future waterfront development in Chester.”

Works stops on Costa Rica’s national stadium

9.Oct.08
Work has been suspended on Costa Rica’s new national stadium, set to be built on the site of the old La Sabana park.

Despite being entirely funded by the Chinese, the proposed 40,000 seater development has come under criticism for its environmental impact on the surrounding area. This week the Sala Constitucional de Costa Rica has ordered a halt to works until a final appeal is heard.

The link to the full article is below the excerpt from insidecostarica.com:

The Court order follows a “recurso de amparo” by the former ministro de Cultura, Guido Sáenz, and a group of citizens, against the Instituto Costarricense del Deporte (ICODER).
Sáenz argued that the new stadium with a capacity of 40.000, double that of the demolished stadium, would be detrimental to the environment and affect the enjoyment of citizens of the Parque Metropolitano de la Sabana, which according to Sáenz, is considered the “pulmón” (lung) of the capital.

The Court order suspending construction is to be maintained until the court delivers a final appeal by the former minister of Culture.

The new stadium project, with a cost of us$72 million dollars, was announced shortly after Costa Rica dropped a 63 year relationship with Taiwan to begin relations with China, in June 2007.

Poole Stadium

Poole, Dorset // United Kingdom | Hosts: Greyhound Racing

Profile

Poole Stadium is a greyhound racing venue and speedway track located in the town centre of Poole, Dorset in England. The stadium is owned by Poole Borough Council. It was built in the early 1930s in an attempt to provide a source of entertainment to the residents of Poole during the Great Depression. Due to a sponsorship deal with local radio station Wave 105, the stadium is also known as the Wave 105 Stadium. It is also often referred to as Wimborne Road, which is a road that runs adjacent to the stadium. During weekdays, the stadium’s large car park is used to provide parking for Poole NHS Hospital’s park and ride scheme.

Uses

Greyhound racing

Greyhound racing was introduced to the stadium in 1960 and continued to take place there up until 1990 when the greyhound track was removed to accommodate a larger football pitch. However, by 1994 football no longer took place at the stadium and greyhound racing returned. Greyhound racing organisation Stadia UK were given a long term lease on the stadium by Poole Borough Council and in 1997 they financed the construction of a modern glass fronted grandstand on the east side of the stadium which incorporated a 440 seat restaurant, two bars, full Tote betting facilities and multiple viewing screens. Race nights take place on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Football

In 1933 local amateur football team Poole Town F.C. moved to Poole Stadium where they began to play their home games in the Western Football League. In the 1946/47 season they had a run in the qualifying rounds of the FA Cup which took them through to a first round match against Queens Park Rangers. Poole Town drew 2-2 at Loftus Road, but lost 6-0 in the replay in front of a then record breaking Poole Stadium crowd of 10,224. They again reached the first round in the 1962/63 season and held Watford F.C. to a 2-2 draw at Vicarage Road, but lost the replay at Poole Stadium in front of a 11,155 crowd.

Poole Town were based at the stadium for 61 years until Poole Council forced them to leave in 1994, blaming low attendances. During their stay at the stadium, the club had financed improvements to the stadium such as a 1,100 seater grandstand on the east side of the football pitch built in 1960, and covered terracing on the west side.

Speedway

The stadium has been home to speedway team the Poole Pirates since the club was created in 1948 and speedway has taken place at the stadium every year since. Prior to 1948, the stadium had been used as a cycle track.

In 2004 Poole Stadium was chosen to host the 2004 Speedway World Cup final by organiser Benfield Sports International (BSI). Poole hosted the qualifying race-off and the final which took place on August 7 with Sweden becoming World Champions. Temporary stands were erected around the corners of the track to provide 2,200 extra seats. The official attendance figure at the stadium for the final was 7,131.

Harold’s Cross Stadium

Harold’s Cross, Dublin // Ireland | Hosts: Greyhound Racing

Profile

Harold’s Cross Stadium is a greyhound racing stadium in the south Dublin city district of Harold’s Cross, owned and operated by the Irish Greyhound Board. In the late 1990s, major redevelopment work saw the venue transformed from a basic gambling driven venue to a fairly well known social event venue. It currently opens on Mondays, Tuesdays and, more popularly, Fridays. It is one of two greyhound racing stadiums in Dublin, with Shelbourne Park being the other.

The stadium has also been used over the years by five football teams who were competing in the Football League of Ireland. Brideville played there for eleven seasons from 1929/30-1931/32 and from 1935/36-1842/43. Dolphin played there from 1932/33-1933/34. Transport played there from 1951/52-1961/62, a total of eleven seasons.

More recently Shelbourne played at the stadium from 1975/76-1976/77 and again from 1982/83-1988/89 before moving to Tolka Park. St Patrick’s Athletic were the last League of Ireland club to play there regularly from 1989/90 up to November 1993, while work was being done to its Richmond Park home. Due to the upgrade of facilities in Harolds Cross, its highly unlikely football will be played there again.

Credit crunch puts Liverpool’s stadium on hold

6.Oct.08
Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry has made it clear that construction work on the new Stanley Park stadium will continue only once the economic downturn has passed.

Work on the new ground had already begun, but with financial experts predicting that the credit crunch could last up to two years, its completion remains a distant dream for Liverpool fans.

Rick Parry also dismissed reports that Liverpool could arrange to groundshare with rivals Everton, who are also in the process of building a new stadium in Kirkby.

The BBC reported Rick Parry’s quotes below. The link to the full article is below the excerpt.

“It is a case of a delay while things settle down. It’s still a good long-term project.

“With the financial markets in turmoil, any major construction project at this time is difficult, it is risky.”

“I do not see any change in direction or any change in plans, and ground share is not back on the agenda,” he added.

“The point is, at this moment it is not the most sensible time to be borrowing huge amounts of money with the markets in turmoil. That will settle down and availability of money will increase.

“The project makes long-term sense, it is the supply of money that is an issue – that will correct itself in time.”
